the journey begins at the san francisco airport at midnight, i couldn't resist taking a photo of all those people in wheelchairs lined up
13 hours later, i have arrived
i was drawn to the bright lights
unfortunately, the breastfeeding room across was closed due to a shortage of breasts
taking the bus since taxis are too damn expensive these days
can you spot me
i'm starving and this place looks promising
the menu: ~30 NT (taiwan dollars) = $1
pick up your food there right after it's done cooking
now this is what REAL food is: 咸荳漿, 燒餅夾蛋, 燒餅油條, 飯團, 小龍包
so damn good and dirt cheap, GOD I LOVE TAIWAN
ten-minute walk to our place in this killer hot and humid weather is crazy
naw, not that ugly building on the right, we live on the 8th floor in the nice one
take off your shoes, none of that american shoes-in-the-house bs
steinway & sons, baby
kitchen is a mess, way to go, mom
cozy little study place that no one ever uses
mommy's room
my domain which i share with my brother
this big TV actually gets used because television in taiwan is actually entertaining unlike in the US
the view from our place, you can see taipei 101 in the back
nice sunset, jet lag, tired, going to pass out

waiting at the bus stop, gonna see a movie
you usually pay when you get off the bus (only fifty cents!), the stop marquee is bilingual
at the Breeze Center, a famous mall where celebrities have been spotted purchasing overpriced designer merchandise (Louis Vuitton and Gucci are all the rage)
a better view of the building. buy the ticket on the 7th floor and watch the movie on the 8th and 9th floors
The Dark Knight here we come
got a bit of time to grab something quick to eat in the food court in the basement, i had no idea those girls were looking at the camera when i took this picture
got a sizzling platter for about $4, relatively expensive, but it's to be expected (it tasted okay)
seats are assigned so you can't sneak into the theaters and are on pretty much the same level (very low angled slope) probably because everyone's a shorty... except me
took a picture while waiting to cross the street to get back home
what an incredible movie, definitely in my top 5, LOVED IT |

yeah, food is inexpensive and the stuff you find at night markets like clothes is pretty cheap, too. theater ticket prices happen to be about the same price as that in the US, though. |

entering a night market, one of taiwan's premiere attractions
jesus christ it's crowded, we're shuffling through the crowd at a blazing 1 cm/s
gotta get a drink and cool off. these girls offered us samples of some juice made of limes, honey, and some other fruit that i've never heard of. it was surprisingly good (or maybe it was just because i was parched) so we bought a few to go.
oh snap, i caught a whiff of 'smelly tofu' and followed my nose to this place
do not be fooled by this misnomer. smelly tofu isn't smelly at all (not to me, anyway, nor to others who enjoy its unique fragrance). the outside is crispy and the inside hot and delicious. it was perfectly paired with the pickled vegetables, one of taiwan's specialty dishes
thank goodness, some breathing room at a crossroad
going to this place that has some famous chicken dish
it was really, really good. i only wish the portion were bigger. it also came with all the side dishes you could eat.
nothing like having your sweaty arms sticking and rubbing next to other people's deliciously wet arms in this crowd
gonna go chill out with some dessert...
yes, mango ice!! milky syrup poured on shaved ice topped with juicy mangoes (mangoes are one of the fruits taiwan is known for). i love this stuff
the night market i went to specialized mainly in food, but i still picked up these shirts, $5 each yeah i'm usually a sucker for these cute+gangster+fob designs
summary of what to do at night markets: don't go to just a single restaurant and stuff yourself there. explore and try a little of something from all around like i did. also, check out places where people are making a mad dash for bargain clothes where the store workers are screaming their cheap prices. you can find some great deals as well as counterfeit merchandise (my brother bought a pair of fake jordans from a seller who went to buy us drinks and told us to wheel her shoe rack into the alley and lock it up for her if we saw the cops ) |

This thread has inspired me to take out the Pimsleur Conversational Mandarin CDs out of the library so you can take me with you next time and I can embarrass you with my poorly-accented Chinese and gay in front of your entire family. |
